I haven't played Habbo for 10 years but I just randomly remembered some old videos that were uploaded of me and a friend.
Back in 2008 and earlier, casinos were really popular, there were some insanely rich owners and impressive rooms. I thought it would be funny to make my own lacklustre version but act like I was super wealthy. This kind of progressed into people betting us real low value items like cabbage/fish and we said they could win a very high value item. (The people mostly knew it was a con when they were betting but it made for hilarious reactions from the onlookers and people trying to expose us)

We would hit when people said stick, obviously swap dice around or simply get the maths wrong.
Might not be everyones cup of tea but no one was "scammed" out of anything of value and a lot of people found it entertaining.

We're possibly making a New Habbo/Sims style game?

Hi there,
I work within a small little team of around 6 people currently, we're working on a game that's fundementatly based on the 2003-2005 Habbo Hotel platform while expandng upon it with modern concepts and such.
But first, before I talk about our game, let me talk to you about my own experinces within Habbo:
I played Habbo Hotel when I was in high school, payed money to get furni, ran a casino that (wasn't full of scammers, I even refunded people who got scammed by people who'd try scam others in my casino haha), was worth around 200 Thrones before Credits were implemented into in-game items... then I just... quit I guess? I don't remember my reasoning, I remember swapping accounts for a better name at one point but never came back afterwards.
I tried to come back in 2013 or so, but the game had changed too much. They got rid of Casino's which was my bread and butter, some of my furni got lost in the merge (thanks Sulake for never looking into this, I guess? Not sure if this happened to anyone else either?)
I even tried recently and had to get things like a trading pass and I had no idea how the achievement system worked and had to ask randoms who were like "how does this 10 year account guy not know how to trade?"... pretty embarrassing... There was all this new furni that I honestly felt very overwhelmed by and people who went into my rooms that helped me get the trading pass were shocked at some of the "old, hardly seen" rares... Apparently Holo Girls are very uncommon now even though they're gorgeous items?
The trading and selling system now seems so out of touch to what I remember. I remember using Habbox for values because Sulake never wanted to assocciate price to items that weren't in the catalog at the given time, so we as a community made our own eco system... Now it seems Sulake took over and associated everything to a base credit value? "A throne is worth 450 credits? What's that in HC Sofas?" is how I felt... Perhaps I'm too old school?
The community seems overran with young children. Given I was a young kid when I first played, it seems the general age seems to have dropped considerably. There's also so many pedophiles... it's actually shocking... Sulake just don't seem to do anything about it? What happened to this company?
I loved 2003-2005 Habbo, it had so much promise in my opinion. But there were things that were always done poorly.

Sulake Never communicated with us properly.
They NEVER helped people who got scammed, they EXPECTED you to pay more money for credits.
If you got hacked, you were on your own. Hobba's would ban the account but they'd never go looking for the furni.

A little fact about how furni works: each furni has a history stored within the game, it's previous owner, who it was transferred to, when it was purchases and created. It has it's own ID and it's easily tracable if someone hacked you and took your furni. Not to mention IP logs are taken and back then Proxies weren't a big thing so most hackers just use the same connection they played the game with.

** About Our Game: **
We began work on our little Habbo Sims style game a little over a month ago using Unity currently... this may change depending on limitations we encounter. Perhaps we'll go back to a HTML5 JavaScript based game for the browser, we're not sure, yet.
We extracted imagery from Habbo as a base template, have made over 200 commits to our repo and have the following things working:

Basic Multiplayer
Room Building (Yes, you build the layout of your room, current max 300 tiles, including stairs... It's VERY inspired by The Sims build mode currently)
Room Names
Banning/Kicking
In-Room Chat System
Walls, Floors, Door Positioning (yes you can move the door)
Trading
Catalog
Administrator Console (to track furni, logs, trade logs, chat logs, monitoring in general, banning, etc, mostly to prevent scams and hacks)

We're working on the following:

Home Screen
Login
Navigator
Eco System (we'd like to model it after 2003-2005 Habbo and not have tradable currency, only furniture)

And much more to follow.
As I said before, we're currently using Habbo's asset set to make this game... so it's isometric, like Habbo... but we'll be replacing all the assets with a stylized, cell shaded, look where almost all the furniture will be hand-drawn as well as the characters and their clothing.
Am I and my team the only ones who want a game like this, or does this game sound appealing to you?
Our work is completely, and utterly, based on our experiences with Habbo and The Sims and what it feels like to be creative with a toolset... and we have one last thing to mention... Our item carrier is inspired by Habbo of 2003's giant hand... with a twist...
It's a bag. Every character always has a bag with them, but, the giant hand is here... It just goes into the bag and then shows you the items. ;)
...Oh and yes, we'd like to keep the casino idea, even if it would mean a forced adult age rating...
Right now we're just looking to see if people are interested in this, and well, we were hoping a lot of older habbo players would be here to see if this is what you're interested in?

My Ideas

Hi, I emailed your staff, and I was told to talk here, so here we go. The first thing I’m going to say is that I know you guys are a business. I can say what I actually want, or I can do the right thing and bring you guys to the table on something that will get us closer to agreeing. My actual ideas will be listed under the ones that are more appetizing to a corporation. So, here’s my ideas:
• Gift Card Trades: Kids (13-16) usually have a bunch of gift cards they don’t use, so you could make a bunch of money from the kids that are on Family Sharing and can’t ask for money for coins and gems. They will thank you. • Separate Debit Account: Teens (16+) might be on Family Sharing but have their own debit or credit cards. If you allow purchases to be made on a separate card than on their iTunes account, those kids have more ability to give you money and more ability to get enough coins to “be cool” in your world. (I know I would use it for that.) • Subscription: Second Life has a subscription where you get a free house (since in SL you have to rent houses normally, which costs Lindens, which is actually of value) $2 in Lindens a week (although I would do more per-day than per-week, so people could budget) and special access to sandboxes which have ever-changing gifts, all for I think $15 a month. I would suggest different plans (like Huuuge Casino does with their VIP purchases) so you can pay $1 a month, $5 a month, $10, $20, $50, even $100 a month and get an equivalent amount of stuff per month (which is easy for you since Avacoins, Gems, and Items are not worth anything outside the game, so it doesn’t cost you anything. It’s free passive income!) If you actually do this as well as the SDA, I will totally sign up for a $20, because this game is where I escape and be cool (I’m autistic in real life, so I’m “special” normally, not “cool.”) One caveat though; in order to use clothes from a VIP subscription, you should HAVE to go to a VIP-only Fashion Contest, because if normal Avakins can’t afford to get a subscription, they should not have to compete with Avakins who are affluent IRL. • Advanced Banking System: Ok, this is a little embarrassing for me, but let me explain: back when Build a Bear had an online game where you could play with your BaB, (and I played it,) they had a bank where you could put coins in and gain interest on the coins while they’re in the bank. So, what about this: there would be a deposit and withdraw in an ATM, and there would also be an investment slot. When you go to investment, you can use Blue Gems to buy mines and stock (expensive, but still possible to get without a coin purchase) and they either mine Green and Red Gems (endlessly but slow) that you can convert to coins at the ATM (one being rarer and more valuable) (Mines) or you can keep them until they’re worth more and sell them for coins. (Stocks) When you deposit Avacoins, you get interest until you take them out. I think that would make Avakin Life more like RL and add some fun to the game.
Ok, now for me being real. I honestly wish you guys could make this game use Buy Me A Coffee instead of In App Purchases. This is a world we live in to escape reality, and we should not be forced to constantly pay to live another life; instead, we should make friends and be whoever we want whenever we want (as long as you’re not being inappropriate.) We didn’t pay to be born and live on Earth, so why should we have to pay to be born and live in Avakin Life? If we want to help you guys out, we will, which is why I recommended all the stuff above. So many worlds have been trashed; I dare say unless you want to consider Minecraft that Avakin Life is the last world left for people older than 13! IMUV has turned into a crude-hole; Habbo has turned into a money-making machine; and Second Life is both! I think if you listen to this, lots of people will be happy. So, I hope you’re hearing me out. Thanks again for your game.

Complaints from my perspective; primarily played from 2006-2009. Drifted away in 2010 and recently logged back on.

I, like many of you have spent more time than I am willing to admit on Habbo Hotel. I play on .com (US) and a little bit on Uk because why not. I loved the game, got to talk to some people from all over the US and around the world. It was awesome. I loved casinos and furni shops. I had rights and dealt in some pretty awesome casinos (RPL, Xx.....U....XX, etc.) I even for a little while owned my own casinos.

This was when reddit was awesome.
Logging back on recently was a nightmare. They don't have as many users as they used to I see on average between 2K-5K users on at a time. If my memory serves me correctly it wasn't uncommon for there to be 10x that on at a time.
There is no longer the competitive drive on reddit. You no longer have to gamble or trade your way to the top. If you can afford to buy some coins you can now go on what is called "Builders Club" where you can rent furni. Also nothing is as rare as it used to be. You can click on an item you see in a room and 80% of items (just a rough estimate) you can either rent, or purchase in the catalogue. You no longer have to go from shop, to shop, to shop, to trade room and spend sometimes hours or even days finding that last petal patch that you want because you can just click the catalogue and buy it. (Just by way of example of course; I don't know that you can actually buy petal patches).
Also what in the world are diamonds? More incentive to buy coins? I think so.
Every single room you click on is now owned by a group or is a groups head quarters. If you click [Friends] or [trade] the same rooms come up under each category because there aren't as many options anymore.
Remember when everything was in value of Habbo Club sofas? That was awesome; easy to conceptualize. I was even okay when they moved to coins being the main value. Now its "T".
I have over 100 club sofas and they're mostly useless.
If you want to sell something now, go ahead, click your furni and click sell in market place, set your price, and play the waiting game. You can sell everything in your room without having to leave your room. SO FUN.
I feel a disconnect from the mods and hotel manager, there probably isn't one anymore. Remember when you could see new rares if you found a way into a mods room or something? That was awesome. What was his name "Kedo"? He was the man.
The rooms are so HUGE you can't see the whole thing. So you're focused on your habbo and can no longer see the big picture.
You get a badge for breathing on the game.. I have been on for an hour at most and I have gotten like 10 badges.

Yes, I have been complaining There are some positives:

The graphics and quality of the game are stupendous, the ability to go back and forth between rooms that you have been in is awesome. The chat history feature is cool so that if you decided to look at something else you can go back quickly.
The public rooms are cool and the habbo guide / mentor / whatever thing is a good idea.

Who is someone you encountered in an online game that you will never forget?

My first serious online game was Habbo Hotel. I was probably 12 or 13 and I wanted to join in on the fun, have some furniture and trade my furniture for other things. My goal was to own a casino. At the time I didn't have access to my parents' credit cards (still don't hah), so I did what any other person would've done: I begged. I begged, played games that awarded the winner with furniture, and attended furniture giveaways that had me lined up for hours, only to find out that there was no furniture left. I played games which were scams in the end, where there would be a winner, and they would just kick them out of the room.
I eventually recieved a rubber duck, from a random guy. I went into my room out of boredom and randomly found it there (in the game you can create a room that allows other people to drop their items into it). Now I was fucking ecstatic. In the game, the rubber duck was worth 1 credit. It was around halloween, and ended up trading that for a Halloween duck (it had green ooze coming out of it), which was worth 1 credit as well. Since this was more of a seasonal item, some people put more weight on it. I eventually found someone that was collecting Halloween goods and I ended up trading my Halloween duck for something worth three credits, and from there I traded for more seasonal items since it was Christmas, and eventually got up to 25 credits worth of goods through more trading, and a little bit of gambling.
I knew that I couldn't own a casino right away, but my best bet would've been to own something that made me of higher status, and what was the best way I could do this? Own something that the people that subscribe to the game own. I researched catalogues of what subscribers owned, and got lucky one day, and was able to trade my 25 credit goods to a Nordic table, which was not as desired, but was still desired by some.
This Nordic table was not an easy sell. I knew this, but bought it out of desperation and to seal my status as higher class since I knew that selling an item of this caliber is easier than selling many grungy items.
Luckily, I ended up trading this to a sap for something worth double its actual value. With this, I knew I was in the home free. I now reached a huge milestone in my game career. Shit, I felt great, forget about this guy that I ripped the fuck off.
But this wasn't enough. I still wanted that casino. So I kept trading. Going from exclusive items that everyone valued, to grungy items because I knew how desperate some people were to own an exclusive item that they'd willing to be ripped off to get the goods. And going from grungy items back to exclusive items.
I eventually had two amazing items, which still wasn't enough to afford a casino with, but I felt so fucking proud of all of the hard work that I accomplished. The worst part was that I didn't want to trade anymore, I was bored. I was bored of the usual routine. I got careless. So I decided that it was now or never.
I walked into a casino, and noticed all of the amazing furniture and decorations that this guy had. I knew what I had against me, but I looked at his decorations and assumed that this guy has all of this amazing furniture, if he scammed people, he would've been long gone. He couldn't have been a scammer. Not at all. So I told the guy that I wanted to play a game of 21. I sent him one of my items, in hopes that I would win and I'd get double, and he accepted the deal. I scored 18. Then it was his turn. He scored a perfect 21, and my item was gone. I was devastated, but decided to win it back. And so we were at it again. This time I scored a perfect 21. I was jumping for fuckin joy! I knew that the only time I would lose is if he also got 21. So now it's his turn, and he rolls over 21! I won! It was all perfect! I was so ready to recieve my two items back, that I immediately initiated the trade, so he could give me the two items. So up the trade window comes, but instead of inserting the items, he cancels it. That's odd. And before I know it, I was kicked out of the fucking room. I was scammed. There went my hard work. 8-9 years after, and I still can't forget the fuckers username. I probably deserved it though. I ripped a lot of people off. I became greedy. I started prioritizing this over a lot of other things.
tl;dr: I started with nothing, got a duck and after a series of trading, scamming, and gambling, I got to a novelty item, but ultimately ended up with nothing.
