You probably know what song we’re talking about; it’s called Luck be a Lady released in 1965 and performed by one of the most popular musical artists - Frank Sinatra.

4. Deal - Grateful Dead

Next one up is the song Deal. It was first performed by the Grateful Dead in 1971, as a regular part of the repertoire through their 1970's tour. Although being less common to the fans during the 1990s, the band continued to perform it. The singer opens with the message: “Since it cost a lot to win and even more to lose you and me bound to spend some time wondering what to choose,” that later kicks off with a chorus: “Don't let your deal go down...”
Loser is another song first performed by the Grateful Dead in 1971 as well, heavily played during 1971 and 1972.

3. Ace of Spades - Motörhead

Ok, the next song is loaded with some great gambling verses like "The pleasure is to play, makes no difference what you say, I don't share your greed, the only card I need is the Ace of Spades" will definitely set you in the right mood for hitting some winning combinations. Released in 1980, the song was inspired by slot machines that the lead singer Ian Fraser “Lemmy” Kilmister played in London pubs.

As soon as you start playing the second song from our playlist “Viva Las Vegas,” you’ll probably picture a huge casino and a great gaming atmosphere. Performed by the legendary Elvis Presley, the 1964-released song brings the glamour of the city, and its beat will get you in the mood for some serious gameplay. This song was written for the movie of the same name starring Elvis Presley, in which he plays a race car driver waiting tables at a hotel to pay off a debt. There’s this famous scene when he performs this song at the talent competition alongside many showgirls.

1. The Gambler - Kenny Rogers

Performed by the legendary country singer Kenny Rogers, The Gambler song is our number 1 - it's full of some betting advice that are relevant today, even though it was released more than 40 years ago, in 1978. Here’s how it goes… “If you're gonna play the game, boy you gotta learn to play it right, you've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run.” These classic chorus lines were told from the first-person perspective inspired by a conversation the author had with an experienced poker player on a train. Written in the form of poker metaphors, Schlitz wrote the tune in honor of his late father.
Johnny Cash is also among other musicians who recorded The Gambler in 1978, on Gone Girl.

This discusses the actual playing of casino games and hence I don’t recommend reading if you may be triggered.
In the UK we (unfortunately) have an enormous online gambling industry.
The vast majority of my monetary losses have been through online blackjack, with the occasional spree on online slots, poker, and other casino games.
Now I’m going to sound like a crazy sore loser, but I have sadly played ALOT it hands, and I am absolutely certain that there are unfair practices that occur within online blackjack that are designed to induce bigger stakes and either maximise casino gains or minimise losses in different scenarios.
For example, I often played blackjack with the ‘perfect pairs’ and ‘21+3’ side bets. One of a number of scenarios play out:
1) The ‘dealer’ would very often hit a perfect pair hand after hand with a frequency never replicated on my own hands and mathematically highly unlikely. I suspect this is a part of the design to make getting a perfect pair seem a more likely occurrence (actually very unlikely) and therefore entice you to bet more money on what is, of course, a money maker for the casino.
2) I could place side bets for half an hour and not hit anything, but the first main bet I would place without them and it would hit with scary frequency, including highly unlikely combinations such as perfect three of a kind. This would cause frustration and guarantee that I would place the side bet again, but of course would not hit. As per point one, I think this is intentional design to encourage the wagering of more funds and to over represent the odds.
3) When a side bet did win, I would lose the main bet 80% of the time even where I was a ‘huge favourite’, I.e. 20 vs a dealer 16. I suspect this is to minimise the loss to the casino whilst encouraging you to continue placing side bets by demonstrating that you ‘can win’.
Other points:
4) After losing almost all my money I would very often place a final angry, frustrated bet and just put all my remaining balance on the table, larger than my usual bet sizing. With insane frequency I would hit a blackjack with that final punt. Again I suspect this might be an attempt to incentivise further better by again demonstrating that you can win and to incentivise betting larger amounts.
The reason I titled this post a scandal is that at some point in the future I can envisage a scandal coming out about these games using these tricks. They mostly relate to the concept of a ‘near miss’ that is a well known design feature within slots, but their use in table games seems even more unethical. I read a good book on this called ‘Addiction By Design’.
I may just be talking crap because I despise casinos/bookmakers now and consider them to be unethical predators. Am I talking crap or does anyone feel that I’m on to something? Any links to research or similar?
