Kubrick apparently experienced directing the Apollo 11 scam as boring work. In the film, he therefor makes Jack play with a tennis ball, instead of attending to his creative (writing) work. By choosing King’s “The Shining”, Kubrick found exactly the right storyline to make his hidden confession about his involvement in the staged moon landing of Apollo 11. On top of that, the numerological “coincidences” are that the value of “Jack” is 7 (representing the control freaks), and the value of “Danny” is 22, meaning communication!

THE VEGAS CONNECTION AKA HOW TO PULL IT ALL OFF Once the decision to simulate all moon voyages was made, NASA and the Defense Intelligence Agency moved swftly. A code name was created : ASP (Apollo Simulation Project), and the effort was divided into the following tasks : 1. Secret top level organization and management 2. Intensive security, including counter-intelligence 3. Undercover procurement of personnel 4. Clandestine equipment design, manufacture, installation and operation 5. Coverup communications, including wiretaps and taping 6. Covert planning and special projects (Aerospace "plumbers")
SECRET TOP LEVEL ORGANIZATION & MANAGEMENT After all, as most aerospace insiders know, the Apollo project was actually a military mission to determine the feasibility of using the moon as a military base of operations against foreign powers. Furthermore, almost 75 per centof all NASA effort was basically military - not space! When the capability of controlling orbiting H-bombs became a reality, the moon became far less important to the Pentagon's planners. Who needs a moon base when it's possible to destroy any or all of the planet with bombs disguised as communications satellites that orbit the earth 24 hours a day, they reasoned. However, despite this diminishment of interest, the military was still strongly supportive of any activity that would enhance U.S. prestige worldwide. Thus, the DIA was structured to provide services to NASA, as shown in the chart. How these various departments or divisions functioned is described in the interpretive tabulation.
Although more than 300,000 persons were directly involved in the building of the atomic bomb (1942-45), no significant information whatsoever reached the public. Thus was established a viable precedent for ASP. The ASP managers could not only point to the Manhattan's success in secrecy, but could use their methods. After all, in an America which has been sliding towards a police state for years (wiretaps, no-knock, civilian surveillance), it was a relatively simple matter to apply these techniques of cloak and dagger to ASP. Rigidly tight security develops Itself a perfect position. Anyone can be excluded by the principle of "need to know". Since NASA has always been 75 per cent military and certainly ASP was in this catagory, preventing anyone high or low from seeing certain hardware, data or locations, was as easy as dropping a thick curtain.
Further, anyone who comprised a threat or knew too much could be taken care of In a number of interesting ways. And all of these measures were justified as being the protection of the national interests. One of the first security measures undertaken by the ASP Security Staff was the establishment of a base of operations.
It was the exciting appeal of a nearby resort city. Thus, it was no accident that the ASP base was located 32 miles east of Mercury, Nevada. The land surrounding the base has long been controlled by the U.S. Air Force and the Atomic Energy Commission - a double threat to any Interlopers. In this view of the region it may be seen that any trespassers would show up instantly on the screens of the constantly-on TV monitors. Also, control of personnel through the few checkpoints could be accomplished with efficiency and dispatch.
The Mercury ASP base was desirable from a number of security-related standpoints: 1. Strange shipments could be delivered inside trucks marked with the dreaded "radiation" sign. 2. Staff could come and go via the heavily guarded airfield. An elaborate warning-wave-off radioradar protection system prevented any private planes from using the field except for dire emergencies. Even then, strangers were prevented from actually seeing anything of a compromising nature. 3. Odd noises, weird devices, excavations were permissible since no outsiders had visual or audio 4. Coded communications could be made by regular or incredibly high frequency microwave radio. 5. Tensions could be relieved by making the less-than-one-hour trip to Las Vegas, a 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week, anything-goes resort boasting more than 30 large casinos. Last but far from least, a liason was established with the hidden rulers of Las Vegas, the crime organization chieftans. When needed, services could be exchanged on a mutually beneficial basis, Le., large sums of money for use of expert "button men". The Cosa Nostra staff presented no problems for ASP Security; they had centuries of practice in remaining silent. U.S.-Mafia criminal cooperation was hardly new. Mafia chieftans aided American troops. During the invasion of Sicily during WWII
Staffing ASP was not as difficult as it might appear to the layman. First, everyone has a price although sometimes the price is one's life. Notwithstanding diehards, recruiting of ASP people went swingingly. People love to know secrets and they also love to have lots of money to spend. ASP provided both. Salaries of $50,000 for minor technicians were not uncommon. We have deleted the pay of higher staff personnel out of sympathy for the taxpayer who might be reading this chapter. In addition to salaries, expense accounts for "rest and relaxation" were virtually unlimited. It is interesting to note that during the build-up of ASP facilities near Mercury, income for many of the Las Vegas casinos hit new highs. Three major categories of ASP personnel existed: 1. Top level management, including DIA and supplemental agency support. 2. Interface personnel, many on "need to know" basis. 3. The astronauts themselves.
Recruiting of the first two categories was done on a money first, patriotism second, basis. It was eminently successful. More descretion was required in obtaining the cooperation of astronauts. For these dedicated and brave men, the following arguments were used: A. The moon mission was tremendously important to the continuance of the United States as a (or THE) power in political, military, scientific and technical areas. B. Billions of dollars and several lives had been spent so far; to scratch the mission at this point (1983) would be disastrous to the administration from a public relations standpoint. NASA was in the same position as a Vegas gambler who is in too deep to quit. (NASA's self-interest was also a strong influence: it is a truism that all bureaucracies seek to expand or at least perpetuate themselves.) C. There would be no danger since the men would not exit the earth's gravitational field. D. Fame and fortune would be theirs, tarnished only slightly by the fact that the voyage would be illusionary. slide E. Intimations that refusal could bring reprisals ranging from demotion to in-flight "accidents". There was no need to remind the candidated of the eight astronauts who had died accidently during the early phases of Apollo slide NOTE: Thomas R. Baron, an employee of North American Aviation, Apollo's prime contractor, submitted a 500 page report on the inadequacies of the program following the fatal fire on Pad 34. Shortly thereafter, Baron was killed when his car apparently stalled in front of a locomotive. In addition to these cogent persuasions, the men approached had lifetime histories of obedience. All were or had been in the armed forces and were accustomed to accepting assignments regardless of risk or rather, in spite of risk. Most pilots are extroverted, game-playing individuals. Thus, it was a relatively simple matter to train the astronauts to play their respective roles in the high drama of ASP.
As with most machinery, strains may develop in humans under stress. The recent breakdown of Edwin A. Aldrin, the lunar module pilot, could be an indication of second thoughts. In summary, ASP recruitment was an unqualified success. That no information has been revealed to this day is not surprising. A CIA-sponsored group known as Air America is noted for its two distinct types of alumni: The silent and the silenced. SLIDE Once a base was established and security ineffect, the preparation of simulation equipment could begin. A complete set of the moon was built in an underground cavern at the ASP base. Every location that would be used for landings was created in exact detail. This elaborate sound stage was code named Copernicus, after one of the lunar craters. It soon earned the name "Cuss" because of problems in lighting and sound. In addition, scale models of the earth, sun, moon and other bodies were carefully built and mounted within a planetarium-like device so that they could be positioned and photographed with accuracy, repeatability and believability. The underground sound stage resembled those at a major Hollywood studio complete with overhead catwalks for lighting, camera dolly tracks and other basic filming and TV equipment. In addition, there was a plethora of special effects tools, including high intensity lighting to imitate the harsh glare of sunlight on the airless moonscape. All scenes of the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM)were filmed on this set with the astronauts as "stars". There were no more problems than would appear during the filming of "Star Trek", "2001, A Space Odyssey", or "Silent Running". After all, Hollywood grips and gaffers, cameramen and directors had acquired long experience in science fiction film production. A plus for the project was the advantage of filming silent. All voices and equipment sounds were dubbed in by an elaborate sound creation and dubbing studio immediately adjacent to the moon set. SPECIAL NOTE: In the film "Diamonds Are Forever", with Sean Connery playing the role of Agent 007 - James Bond, there is a curious and unexplained scene. He enters a secret research facility in the Nevada desert by ruse. Suddenly he finds himself in a large room in which there is an authentic moon landscape. Lumbering about in their clumsy space suits are two would-be astronauts. Nothing happens, the scene is not explained, and the viewer is left to ponder Its significance. Could it be...? Yes, it could! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJSvQ80p1ks
SIMULATION PROPULSION HARDWARE SLIDE
The term "hardware" became a standard term in the aerospace Industry for anything that was not stored in a file cabinet or recorded on tape. In short, it meant anything that was manufactured: from an Automatically controlled solenoid to an IDIOT (Intermediate Digital On-Line Transducer). From the date of the decision to simulate, a modified hardware program was conducted. For example, the Saturn C-5 moon rocket assembly was built to specifications with one major modification: instead of the totally unreliable F-l engines, five booster engines of the more dependable B-l type as used in the C-l cluster for the Atlas missile were used. Although a cluster of five B-l engines produced only one-half of the output of a single F-l chamber, the power (750,000 pounds thrust) was sufficient to launch the virtually empty Apollo vehicle. If the rocket had been in its designed form it would have weighed 6,000,000 pounds, or 3000 tons fully loaded. This is the weight of a U.S. naval destroyer, further pointing out the total impracticality of the venture.
However, by eliminating every apsect of the moon voyage - fuel, heavy engines, LEM vehicles, etc., the total weight of the modified, shortrange, simulated voyage Apollo was less than one-twentieth of the original, or about 150 tons. This loading was well within the capabilities of the B-l propulsion units. Also, since the originally planned two million parts were reduced to a mere 150,000 gadgets, the success of the limited mission was virtually assured. However, even C-l Atlas engines were known to explode on the pad or shortly following launch. Thus, the escape module for the astronauts was left intact and functioning. If there had been an accidental loss of thrust or other mishap, it would have been simple to have the "saved" astronauts merge from the escape module after its recovery.
COVERUP COMMUNICATIONS, INCLUDING WIRETAPS AND TAPING
Although the most critical element from the standpoint of press and public relations interface, simulated communications and printed data were technically the simplest to produce. 62 First, an agreement was obtained by DIA and ASP representatives working with and through the semisecret Council on Foreign Relations. This agreement being a reciprocal one that would ensure silence on any revelatory Apollo Information by major foreign powers. Russia was the only nation that had the, sophisticated tracking radar capable of foUowing Apollo and thus sabotaging the simulation. But Russia was planning extensive commercial exchange with the U.S. and intelligently recognized that they would gain no real advantage by destroying the U.S. myth . After all, their space program had always been ahead of ours and this fact was weU-established worldwide. Actually, there has never been a real problem between or among major nations where control of the masses has been a consideration, i.e., cold and hot wars to keep the masses occupied while they are being fleeced before slaughter. . The presentation of "on-scene" data was divided into these categories: 1. Visual presentations to the public or uncleared personnel. A. Launch B. Re-entry (although out of sight of carrier crews) 2. Radio transmissions during launch, trip to moon, exploration and return. 3. TV transmission from the moon. 4. Still pictures; black and white and color.
VISUAL PRESENTATIONS Hair-raising for the simulators but most convincing to the public were the launches. After all, if people could drive to the Cape, park and see an immense rocket lift itself off the pad, was this not the ultimate proof that a trip was, indeed, being made to the moon itself? The fact that once out of sight, the vehicle traveled a sub-orbital trajectory to the south polar sea (and jettisoned), did not diminish in any way the blazing glory of the launch to the moon. The return to the earth by the astronauts in their re-entry module was far less risky than the launch. This was true since it waseffected by dropping the module from a C-5A cargo plane. Just prior to this drop, they were picked up at a super-secret, well camouflaged island south of Hawaii. It is interesting to note that the module was always dropped out of sight of the carrier's crew. Had the simulators desired, it would have been possible to drop the module into the Pacific from a far-ranging nuclear submarine. However, the plan method was chosen since it required a smaller crew "in the know" and ease of security that evolves from a hidden air base (Tauramoto Archipelago.)
They are then flown back and sent to Las Vegas to party for two days then flown to the live set to do a taping of the moon landing with kubrick (why do this live?)
Was the Apollo project, real or otherwise, simply a gadget? Was it really one of the means that the controllers use to retain their control? I think the answer to that is yes. However, it was more than just a 30 billion dollar astrophysical toy; it was a replacement for a shooting war. As Shakespeare so wisely said, "Sweet are the uses of adversity." Although the Apollo project was adverse In the sense that it did little more than give employment to many people and advance certain sectors of science, it did allow the present warfare state to maintain the economy without killing a lot of people. In that repect, the Apollo was a "good" project. But viewed from the present day of $1 per loaf of bread and 50 cents a pound of sugar, It was really only a stopgap measure; one designed to maintain control for a few more years while the controUers worked on more lasting schemes . Apollo was a part of the economic disease that now threatens to create monetary havoc not only in the U.S., but worldwide. In that sense, it was genuinely adverse, but only for a limited time. It has been obvious to many that the American standard of living could not continue forever in the midst of abysmal poverty In many other parts of the world. Even though we have been able to live affluently in a wartime of quasi-wartime economy since about 1939, it was inevitable that one day we would no longer be able to borrow to support an unreal and profligate way of life. Ultimately, the pyramid-building phase (throwing money into unproductive projects) had to come to an end.
RADIO TRANSMISSIONS Of utmost simplicity, once installed and checked out, was the radio data transmitted "from" the moon vehicle. Secret, leased and well-secured telephone lines were connected to the antennae inputs of all space communications centers. These included the major tracking stations in Australia, Africa and the west coast of the United States. To accomodate amateur radio operators who might want to tune it, identical broadcasts were made from an orbiting satellite. So perfect were all of these simulations, that the momentary blackout when the module was supposed to be behind the moon was faithfully reproduced.
TELEVISION BROADCASTS Unquestionable the most interesting and entertaining for all concerned (simulators and fools alike) were the scenes of astronauts gamboling about the lunar set. In addition, these delightful frolics were really elementary exercises for the stage crews. After all, decades of special effects development for the motion picture industry preceded the need for this expertise . A curious anomaly occured with respect to this phase of the simulation. The set had to be photographed through filters and electronic "noise "had to be added to avoid a too-perfect picture. Otherwise these scenes would resemble too closely the action from "Star Trek" and other science fiction presentations. Even so, many viewers in bars and country clubs all over the U.S. suspected rather loudly that the scenes were a fake. Little of this reached the newspapers. Note in this montage of photographs of the astronauts "at work" on the moon that the simulation was simplicity itself. With a totally black space background, a rough but firm moon surface and the LEM featured prominently, the reasonably authentic lunar scene was well within the capabilities of motion picture set designers and special effects experts. The range marks lend an uncanny resemblance to reality - a tribute to the painstaking work of the simulators on an unlimited budget The simulators had a choice of several expensive earth models for their "blue-green-island-in-space" photos. Again, highly developed Hollywood techniques allowed many types of pictures to lie with great believability
PLANNING AND SPECIAL PROJECTS This department was charged with the overall responsibility for planning and direction of the simulation. They also undertook (an appropriate word) to cover up any errors of theirs or any other ASP group. It included such elements as: FAVORABLE PUBLICITY RELEASED THROUGH ALL MEDIA The astronauts and their families as viewed through a bottle of syrup. The success of various flights and tests, heavily colored. Advantages of space flight. Many articles were ghostwritten for such characters as Wernher von Braun and appeared in popularized science magazines. Diagrams of space trips. Photographs of lunar landing vehicles, space suits, food and drink, including a new radiator cleaning agent called Tang. Puffery for such over-fed NASA pontiffs as James E. Webb. . Another example of the work of the PASP Group. APPENDD( SCHEDULE AND CHRONOLOGY OF SIMULATED MOON FLIGHTS ITEM REMARKS CLIPPED TIMETABLE FROM EVERNOTE Once the Saturn was out of sight and until the capsule "returned", all evidence of the "flight" was in the form of electromagnetic wares. These, of course, are simple to simulate and transmit. Any or all of the four systems described below could have been employed. Others may have been used but these appear to be the most logical.
LEASED PHONE CONNECTIONS The basic system was provided by direct wire connections interspersed with microwave transmissions. All were basically Bell System communications on a CIA basis : no monitors, or total "hands off*' by the lessors. At the input were, of course, the synchronized tape decks that provided the complete moon landing simulation. It should be noted that these included the response and "recommendations" of Mission Control at Houston. In other words, these tapes were not just transmissions from the moon — they included all audio and the simulated video from the moon set. Thus, Mission Control at Houston and all other communicators were speaking into essentially dead mikes. Data sent into oscilloscopes, graphic recorders and TV screens showing data displays, computor recording banks, were all from this one master tape. Again, there could be no error since all events had been meticulously recorded even to the "boo-boos", jokes and seeming improvisations of the astronauts and their counterparts on earth. Experience for this masterful presentation was derived from decades of sound track effort for both motion pictures and TV presentations of science fiction adventures.
LOW FREQUENCY TRANSMITTERS Unknown to most Americans is the existence of an ultra-low frequency transmission station in a northwestern state. This facility is used to broadcast messages to submerged nuclear submarines. The radio waves sent by this station are so long they are lethal to humans if the latter are adjacent to the transmitter. This permits automatic security. Also, the receivers are of special design and few amateurs would even dream of receiving this type of broadcast. Therefore, ULF was used as a backup to the other methods of transmitting Apollo simulation data of all types . SATELLITE The most sophisticated method was microwave satellite to microwave. As a backup, a special satellite contained a tape unit that could be triggered by the ASP control station at Mercury. True Detective Season 2 and the Tibetan Book of the Dead: part 2/3

https://www.reddit.com/TrueDetective/comments/6wlztq/true_detective_season_2_and_the_eastern_book_of/
Episode 2: Night Finds You
Episode 2 begins with a pseudo face-to-face between Frank and Jordon. During this particularly revealing exchange, Frank describes his fears that he died as a child, and that all of reality is trying to tell him so. From their exchange:
What if I’m still in that basement in the dark? What if I died there? That’s what that reminds me of...something’s trying to tell me that it’s all papier-mache. Something’s telling me to wake up, like… like I’m not real. Like I’m only dreaming.
Other relevant info from this exchange includes the importance of children to the couple, and some commentary on death.
Jordon: "You don't take anything with you." Frank: "Just yourself, whatever that was."
Following this is Woodrugh's enfoldment into the case, and then a brief meeting between Frank and Ray. During this meeting, Frank becomes angry when he realizes Ray considers him his best source of information for the case.
Later we witness Woodrugh and his mother's interactions in her trailer: this scene is oddly sexual, with Woodrugh's mother demonstrating inappropriate body language and comments to her son. A herpes-sore visible above her lip. This sequence might be another nod toward the maiden/mother dichotomy that plays throughout the season. His mother's multiple suggestions of his staying in his old room is possibly indicative of a return to the womb.
Afterward, Antigone and Ray visit a medical center ran by Dr. Pitlor. His nurses/aides all demonstrate a detached, Stepford wife-like demeanor. On his book shelf, Barack Obama's The Audacity of Hope is visible: this book is out of character for the doctor, but its title is indicative of the fruitlessness of hope in the third Bardo. Further, a painting of a raven in a Native American style is visible near the door, and a distinctly vaginal geode is on his desk. In the dialogue between Antigone and the doctor, we learn that he knew her father when they both worked with a hippy commune known as "The Good People." Antigone comments that 2 of the kids from the commune are in jail, and 2 have committed suicide. This era would have aligned with Antigone's abduction and murder in the cave. "I left all that behind," she tells the doctor. "It was a fucked up place." This line points toward Antigone's unique ability, between the 4 mains, to reject the past and remove herself from it.
Following this is a discussion between Frank and the mayor, during which the latter describes his fears that his son is losing his mind. "I fear he is a destroyer," he says. This harkens to the archetypal relationship between son and father as described by Joseph Campbell, and is depicted in such stories such as Zeus and Cronus and, more recently, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker (George Lucas cited Campbell as an inspiration for Star Wars). The mayor goes on to state that "children are a disappointment." Later in the season, we learn about the mayor's death and his son's taking of the office, representing dharmic lineage through rebirth, similar to Ray's relationship with his ex-cop dad observed later in the season. Further, I might also suggest the element of the son destroying the father is also present in Frank and Osip's relationship, with Osip serving as proxy father.
In the next scene, Ray tells Antigone his theory on how the world works: "We get the world we deserve." This is the ultimate underlying concept of the third Bardo: an afterlife tailor-made to force us to relinquish who we were. Also notable in their exchange is Ray stating, "Bad habits: haven't lost one yet." This line helps to set up Ray's redemptive journey through the third Bardo.
Next, a scene between Woodrugh and his girlfriend demonstrates his character's biggest flaw: he has little individual identity outside of the roles placed on him by other people, and is driven by a misguided commitment to living up to those standards. "Who the @$#@ am I supposed to be?" he demands of her. "I don't know who you are supposed to be!" is all she can tell him. As she attempts to break off their relationship, Woodrugh tells her, "...this isn't me doing this. This isn't me."
Later in the episode, we observe Antigone on an escort-service website advertising "Naughty Cali Angels." Rather than demonstrating the expected disgust with the pornographic images, she appears engaged and fascinated. This a commentary on her own dharmic challenge, to attain a healthy sexuality and capacity for relationships. Recall the following quote from Jacob's Ladder (which, again, I'd contend was a major influence on season 2):
"If you're afraid of dying, and you're holdin' on, you'll see devils tearin' your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freein' you from the world."
The connection between this line and the "Naughty Cali Angels" might feel a bit weak, if not for the scene immediately following, where-in Woodrugh observes two gay men dressed only in briefs and angel-wings walking down the street. The intensity in his stare suggests tortured feelings, anger or frustration (recall an earlier scene, when he describes wanting to hit a guy at the bank for hitting on him). This was a clever touch, as we don't have any info on our initial watch at this point about Woodrugh's sexual preferences. It is only later in the season the Woodrugh is forced to meet his own nature face-to-face, which will ultimately culminate in his release from the third Bardo.
Speaking of face-to-face, the following scene is another with Frank and Ray in the bar. During their discussion, Ray makes it plain that he is suicidal in light of his loss of visitation rights with his son. "I got no reason to keep at this," he tells Frank. Still, he takes Frank's info and visits Caspere's second house. Prior to his getting shot-gunned to the chest, a copy of a book of photographs by Japanese artist Nobuyoshi Araki is visible. I'd like to think its Love and Death, or Self,Life,Death or some other thematically relevant title, but it might just be Tokyo Lucky Hole.
Episode 3: Maybe Tomorrow
Rather than rehashing the beginning of episode 3, I'm just going to borrow some text from Ray's character description in part 1 of this analysis. Also, I'd suggest you review the description of the second Bardo in part 1 as well.
At the beginning of episode three, Ray is sitting at a table across from his father [face-to-face example]. In the background, a Conway Twitty impersonator sings "The Rose," a song about releasing fear and being reborn. His father foretells Ray's death in the final episode, "running through trees," until they "shoot you into pieces." As he describes this soon-to-be event, the lyrics sang in the background are:
It's a dream afraid of waking That never takes the chance/ It's the one who won't be taken Who can not seem to give/ And the soul afraid of dying That never learns to live.
"Where is this?" Ray asks his father. "I don't know," his father responds. "You were here first."
Ray then looks down, and sees his shotgun wounds.
This, in accordance to the working theory, is Ray's encounter with the second Bardo. It is already constructing the events that will move him toward release, but he is not ready accept his death. This results into a transition into the third Bardo, with him appearing to wake up on the floor with no apparent wound or serious injury. This series of events appears to be little more than a David Lynch homage with serious compromises to narrative integrity, unless considered in light of the Bardo Thodal. Video of this scene below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt67YwRx1T8
Following this scene, we get a look at Ray, laying in his urine on the floor of Caspere's second house. The camera angle allows a skewed look at his face: his complexion is ashy, pale, and corpse-like. We are given every suggestion he is dead, right up until he opens his eyes and says, "Pissed myself." This line has nothing to do with the Bardo theory, but it makes me laugh so I am including it.
We soon learn he was shot with riot shells containing rubber pellets. This is how he is still alive. Despite the fact that riot rounds are always billed as LESS LETHAL ammunition (those caps aren't mine: websites that sell these rounds frequently advertise them with that description in all-caps. Example: http://www.americanspecialtyammo.com/12-ga--less-lethal.html) Here's the deal: if you take one of these rounds in the chest from less than ten feet away without a vest (both of which apply to the first shot Ray takes) there is a very good chance you will die from impact trauma (including internal bleeding and heart-stoppage from force of shock). From point-blank range, which the second shot was from, you are all but guaranteed to die. At the least, the wound would be significant and totally unlike the bruising Ray demonstrates.
So are we to believe Pizzolatto didn't know this? That he would include Ray's shotgunning just for the point of an episode's cliffhanger followed by a Lynch homage, and then just explain it away with something as weak as, "Oh, they were just riot rounds, and none of that stuff (including his father foretelling his "true" death) meant a thing?
Alright folks: I'm going to be blunt. If you feel that way, watch it again, and consider how meticulous the violence and surrealism is. Remember that, regardless of your previous opinion of season 2, that it was written by the guy who gave us season 1. Really, really ask yourself if this is just something poorly written and underdeveloped, or if it had underlying (i.e., esoteric) significance that could radically change the course of the story without appearing to (as is the nature of the third Bardo experience). If you can't do that, than you may as well stop reading. I'm not going to be able to convince you. However, if you are still on the fence, keep going: lot's more evidence to come.
Next up is Frank and Jordan at the fertility clinic, and Frank is unable to provide sperm. This highlights not just his momentary impotence, but his larger impotence in the world: he is a hungry ghost who can never reach his desired status (legitimate businessman, father, wealthy). The third Bardo is not a place of progression or accomplishment: it is a place of release and surrender. "There is no part of my life not fraught with liver-dying importance," he tells Jordan.
At ~10:50, we get a face-to-face in the bar between Frank and Ray. Prior to Frank's arrival, Ray is giving a haunted look to the stage area in the bar, recognizing it as the scene of his second Bardo experience. Ray confronts Frank with his suspicion that he had been walked into an ambush, and that another ambush could be coming. Another notable touch is Ray switching to water: this is indicative of the beginning of his redemption journey, as he begins to attempt to master his vices. "Is Ray hurt? What happened?" the bartender asks Frank. "Somebody murdered him," Frank replies (another line that is either garbage or very meaningful...).
During Antigone and Woodrugh's visit to the mayor's house, we meet his trophy-wife. Her Russian accent pegs her as a prostitute/mail-order bride, which foreshadows the involvement of Russian underworld influences in Vinci's city government and upper-class. Fun moment: when the mayor's son denies knowing Caspere ("Some old man who worked with my Pops."), a howling wind blows open the door, scattering his step-mother's fashion cutouts. "No, no, no! Who left the door open?" she screams. Caspere, the friendly ghost, that's who. Watch it, see if you agree.
Man, now I gotta start looking for weird Caspere moments.
Anyway, in the next sequence we have Ray at the doctor's office. This is notable because it's sort of describes how he had been living, and allows him to express his redemptive desire to "change some things." As he exits, the doctor says, "Can I ask you something, Mr. Velcoro? Do you want to live?" Ray can't even respond. He stands there, mouth open, staring at his chest x-ray, haunted by what he can't admit yet.
Shortly thereafter we are given our first exposure to the blue diamonds. The most famous blue diamond in the world is the Hope diamond, and remember that "hope" is a bad word in the third Bardo. Incidentally, the Hope Diamond is notorious for being cursed. http://mentalfloss.com/article/19579/quick-10-10-victims-hope-diamond-curse
This abandonment of hope is further developed in the following sequence with Ray in the police chief's office: in the background is a poster of the familiar "Hang in there" kitten, but with the caption reading "Eat shit & die" instead. Ray definitely eats some here, though he is not ready to die.
In a later scene, we observe Ray and his father, an ex-cop and unpleasant man. As stated before, Ray carrying on with the family profession is indicative of dharmic lineage, which is further reinforced as Ray studies old family photos that span generations. By salvaging his father's badge from the trash while the old man decries the fallen state of police work, Ray makes another step toward his own redemption.
Next, we have another scene with Frank and Osip: the previously mentioned painting of the snake in the crocodile's mouth is again prominent in the background (see episode 1 analysis).
Following this is the revelation of Woodrugh's sexuality with his former military mate. "That stuff about the past...not denying it...letting it be a part of you..." his friend says, and describes Woodrugh's dharmic challenge. Still, Woodrugh does his best to hide that part of himself from himself, even to the point of pushing his friend down. However, in a scene occurring later in the episode (42:37), Woodrugh, while questioning prostitutes, observes a man dressed as an angel (recall the previous episode analysis) giving oral sex to another man. He makes the acquaintance of a male prostitute who provides him info.
Later, Ray's ex-wife stops by to tell him the state police have been by, asking questions about him. He is on borrowed time; the third Bardo is already collapsing around him.
During the episode's close, the song playing is "Intentional Injury" by Bonnie "Prince" Billy. It's first lyrics are: "In time you find your way to release..."
We having fun yet?
Episode 4: Down Will Come
The title of the episode likely comes from the nursery rhyme "Rock-a-bye-baby," and indicates calamity for our four mains. Early in the episode we witness Frank angry because his avocado trees won't grow, a metaphor for he and Jordan's inability to conceive (which, in a larger sense, is a metaphor for the impossibility of anything to thrive in the third Bardo). Jordan attempts to discuss their options for having kids, suggesting "alternate" options, specifically adoption. Frank doesn't like this idea, saying he doesn't want to take on another parent's "grief," and that, "They all come in with their own...don't you and I and every other hapless monkey on the planet? At least with your kid its your sins." This continues the established theme of children as figurative rebirth, and the idea of dharmic lineage passed from parent to child.
One of my favorite things about season 2 is the relationship between Frank and Jordan. She forgives him everything, and gently nudges him in the right direction. She is consistently portrayed as his equal in intelligence and ferocity. She is his true soulmate, his anima. This is a theme I will develop more in further analysis and edits to previous material, but this scene was warm enough for me to want to initiate discussion here.
A less functional relationship is presented in the next sequence, with Woodrugh waking up hungover (with plenty of beer bottles in evidence) and uncertain of his location. He learns that, while blackout drunk, he ran into his military mate the night before and went home with him. "You let yourself go, man," his mate tells him. "Be what you want. It ain't bad." But, as we are probably getting used to at this point, Woodrugh is unable to let go of his perceived identity. In the following scenes, as he tries to get back to his motorcycle, and is visibly horrified by his previous night's activities.
Woodrugh's motorcycle, it should be said, is an extension of his character, similar to a knight on his horse. He desires the simplicity and single-mindedness the life of a bike cop provides him: even when using it in a suicide attempt, it is a means of escape. When he arrives at the club, only to find his bike missing from its parking spot, he is nearly hysterical. As the reporters chase him with questions about atrocities committed by Black Mountain, the mercenary group he was a part of, a claustrophobic and nightmarish tone is created as Woodrugh is increasingly being brought face-to-face with who he is, and now without his bike to escape with.
Later in the episode, when Ray has picked Woodrugh up and they are driving, Ray tells him that after his experience with Black Mountain, "...everything else should be a cakewalk." Woodrugh, becoming upset, tells him this is not the case (implicitly stating how much the events of the last 12 hours have shaken him). He goes on to say, "I did everything they said: army, PD...but it doesn't matter. You do what they say, it doesn't matter. Been listening to them for so #$%#ing long that I don't even know who the #@$@ I am."
Ray: "You're a survivor. Everything else is just dust in your eyes. Blink it away man."
Woodrugh: "I don't know..."
This exchange hits a few of our themes: Woodrugh's reliance on other's for his sense of identity, the subsequent crumbling of that identity, as well as doubt regarding his "survivor" status...that final line seems to indicate his own doubts on that score.
Flash forward to about 23 minutes in, and we see Woodrugh's reaction to the revaluation that his girlfriend is pregnant. His reaction is confused, then excited. My suspicion is this is only Paul doing his usual thing: taking on a dutiful role to avoid having to be himself.
Next up is a visit to the Panticapaeum Institute with Ray and Antigone to visit her dad regarding info on Dr. Pitlor. During this visit, her father makes some interesting comments, telling Antigone she had an "old soul" from the start, and that Ray "must have had hundreds of lives." Ray responds with, "Well, I don't think I could handle another one." He also comments on Ray's aura, stating it is green and black. Google isn't giving me a good answer on this, but according to a quick survey of some websites, the consensus is that green is the color of the heart and lungs (the same area that Ray was shotgunned and fixated on during his visit to the doctor), while black is the color of grudges against self and others, as well as "past-life hurts." Perfectly possible Antigone's dad was spouting nonsense too.
Here's the thing though: later in the episode, during another Ray and Frank face-to-face at the bar, Frank comments that Ray's talents are being wasted and that, "Black rage goes a long way." Seems an odd line. I'd contend that the black in Ray's aura are his rage and destructiveness, while the green in it is the nurturing side we see with his son, as well as with Antigone and Woodrugh. Another line from this face-to-face from Frank: "Sometimes your worst self is your best self." This line causes visible conflict on Ray's face as he struggles with the correct course of action. Should he join up with Frank and go deeper into his worse self, or maintain on the redemptive road as a cop.
In the next scene, he seems to have made up his mind. We see him gift his father's badge to his son, telling him to look at it when he wants to remember him. "But it's grandfathers," his son says. "Yeah. My father, me, now you," Ray replies. Another reference to dharmic lineage.
Following this is are scenes with Frank and Jordan in the casino. At the end of this is a bit of foreshadowing: Jordan suggests she and Frank walk away from this. Frank asks if they walk away, "...what do we walk with." Jordan does not reply verbally, but takes his hand in a gesture of solidarity. This, I think relates to Frank's ultimate end in the desert, as he makes his long walk, he envisions her beside him even as he leaves his body behind.
The episode ends in the engineered ambush of our main 4, fulfilling the oft-repeated warning from the Eastern Book of the Dead: Beware the ambush of the Bardo...
Episode 5: Other Lives
Superficially, the title references the life changes that have occurred for our 4 mains in the months following the previous episode's ambush and its aftermath. In the first shot, a license plate is prominently displayed that reads 3THO479. I'm getting wacky here, but Pizzolatto is the type of guy who likes to hide stuff in the visual details as well as the dialogue. 3THO4 could read as "three though four," a reference to the 3 partners (the cops) and their hidden/occult/underworld partner (Frank). Also "479" is the area code for Northwest Arkansas, where Pizzolatto completed his Masters degree in creative writing, and where season 1 was originally set in the scripts.
This is pure speculation for the fun of it. I've already had too much coffee this morning.
For Frank's part, we find him in his new house. It is apparent that he has liquidated his previous residential asset for money; it also apparent he hates it. He cannot deny he is diminished (to answer a question he posed in episode...2 I think?).
Ray has lost the glorious, God-given 'stache, and has taken Frank up on his offer (as intimated by his giving his son his father's badge in the previous episode). While speaking with his previous supervisor, Ray says, "Better to walk before they make you run." This line is foreshadowing for his death in forest in the final episode, where he is indeed forced to run by the very people he thought his resignation would remove him from. Another line of interest: "I appreciate a good rut." That's kind of the problem, Ray. Finally, his supervisor tells Ray that he can no longer live in his house (reserved for municipal employees), and tells him, "C'mon Ray: you don't want to live here anymore." Ray is still figuring this out. In a following scene, Ray is collecting rent money in an immigrant ghetto building. Disgusted by himself and his surroundings, all he can do is say, "Jesus Christ," indicating his rising to need to return to the redemptive path he had been on.
Next up is Antigone at a sexual harassment education class. Note that all the males in the room are clustered together, while she sits apart from them. She refuses to acknowledge that she did anything wrong. Unlike Woodrugh (who's choices are often "wrong" because they do not align with his own character) Antigone choices are "wrong" because they go against what is expected of her (by her father, coworkers, superiors, etc). This is inline with her classical namesake: the Greek Antigone's most notable characteristic was a willingness to defy convention based on her own personal moral code.
This dichotomy between Woodrugh and Antigone is further explored in the next scenes. While Antigone easily controls her class by being unapologetically sexual, Woodrugh is at the mercy of the actress who accused him of sexual misconduct. "I. Am. Innocent," he states coldly. This innocence extends not only to the accusations of the actress, but also those of her attorney regarding his activities with Black Mountain. Not that it matters: Woodrugh has been put on insurance fraud duty, about as far from the bike as he can get.
Something random but notable: when Antigone was talking with the lady from episode 1 whose sister was missing, she looks at a party invite depicting two black mountains embossed in gold...I have always thought that Woodrugh's Black Mountain mercenary group was especially ominously named...possibly something there worth developing? A few scenes later, Antigone asks her partner for info regarding the missing sister's last phone call. He tells her it came from somewhere in the mountains north of LA. Also, she promises that, if he will help her out, she will do a "fearless and searching moral inventory." This is foreshadowing for her upcoming dose of MDMA at the party, and its subsequent revelations.
In the following scene, Ray is making another recording for his son. He tells him that "Pain is inexhaustible; it is only people that get exhausted." The suggestion, of course, is that there is a limit to how far a man can carry forward in the face of endless and intensifying suffering; the is the point when the third Bardo breaks, when the constricting illusion becomes intolerable and must be escaped from, even at the cost of everything we are.
Shortly thereafter, in the club with Frank and Jordan, he tells her that "The design does not work, when I am knee-deep in dirt; You don't bring a kid into a situation like this." Reference to him being buried, and the impossibility of birth (i.e., rebirth) at this stage. This is Frank's hubris though: he still believes he can ascend. He doesn't understand his rebirth can only happen via the "alternate" means Jordan suggested in the previous episode. "...me, I didn't ask for this world...I took it." Frank states his desire to be transparent about who they are and their intentions going forward as they continue to face crisis; Jordan responds by telling him that she can't be a mother. Again, as his soulmate and equal, Jordan cannot do what Frank cannot do: engage in the rebirth process in their current state.
The previous scene contains brutal honesty between Frank and Jordan regarding who they are (paraphrased, "I'm barren and you are a pimp."). This sets up a exploration of the the polar dichotomy between Woodrugh and Frank in the following sequences, where we shift between Paul having dinner with his fiancé and her mother, and back to Frank and Jordan. As Jordan gives Frank unconditional love and support with spot-on criticism (leading him to a moment of catharsis and self-realization of what he values), we know Paul is only suffering, stealth-pounding drinks to get through dinner, and biting his tongue. Jordan tells Frank that she is going home, that he should join her: and while he can't do this to the extent that the Bardo demands, he will that night, anyway. Woodrugh is already "home," but his true character chafes there; his "home" is an ego construct that will not ultimately survive.
Next up is a face-to-face in the bar with Antigone and Ray. It is made explicit the 3 cops are all miserable, that their attempted or forced new lives are choking them all. Ray states "...my powers of influence are so meager in the sublunar world of ours...," a smooth, likely subconscious comment on his own existence in the world of the third Bardo. Ray is not interested in being enfolded in Antigone's desire to continue their investigation into Caspere's murder.
That is, until he is offered a chance to retain custody by the state liaison who also want to continue the investigation. During this conversation, Antigone suggests, "Its never too late to start over again." Very bardo-esque in attitude. This is also when Ray is told that the man he took retribution on for his wife's rape was the wrong man, and that the man recently arrested shares DNA markers with his son. Ray is visibly upset by this, of course.
In the following scene, Frank attempts to extort the Catalyst executive. I hadn't noted that the waste company that poisoned the land that was bought was name "Archon." This is a word whose most common meaning is the ancient Greek word for "ruler." However, in ancient gnosticism, the archons were servants to the demigod that helped to keep souls of from reaching transcendence, instead remaining imprisoned in the demigod's world (that is, the world we are born into). This resonates well the the Bardo themes obviously, and its likely the Pizzolatto would have been exposed to them through Grant Morrison's work on The Invisibles (another comic with recognized influence on season 1.)
http://comicsalliance.com/true-detective-comic-books-weird-fiction-secrets-influences-alan-moore-grant-morrison-invisibles-hbo/
Anyway, this meeting also provides the narrative impetus to enfold Frank into the investigation (due to shared interest in Caspere's hard drive). Perhaps this is what the license plate was referring to at the beginning of the episode?
Next up is Ray's solo meeting with Dr. Pitlor. Prior to Ray's entrance, Pitlor can be seen reading Carlos Castaneda's A Separate Reality. He questions Ray's "perceptions of reality" prior to receiving a major beat down.
Later, we see Ray and his ex, as she describes her rapist being arrest, and her own desires to put an end to the "fake story" of Ray's parenthood. This leads him to Frank's house, to confront him. Prior to his arrival, Frank and Jordan have come to an agreement on the possibility of adoption, of moving forward with the "alternative" path. Frank is willing to adopt a child, meaning he is willing to reach out to child like himself at that age, to heal the errors of his past. Frank notes the ceiling is free of water stains, further suggesting the movement away from a collapsing bardo, but on of rebirth into a different life.
Maybe in a separate reality.
Episode 6: Church in Ruins
Episode 6 picks up where 5 left off: Ray's confrontation of Frank regarding him being set up to kill a man he believed was his wife's rapist. Ray states that he "sold his soul for nothing." Frank replies that Ray used the info to become what he had "always waited to become..." and, "if that that's the sort of thing that keeps you out of Heaven, I don't want to go." This highlights a key difference between Ray and Frank: the former fell from higher state, while Frank has been damned for much longer.
Gradually, Ray begins to believe Frank's protests that he was not attempting to set him up. Their conversation turns to the Caspere investigation. Frank drops the following line: "This past? Shit you're worked up on? It can go away." This is also the part where Frank becomes firmly enfolded, and his abandonment of the "alternative" path he'd been considering.
Later in the episode, when Ray confronts the man arrested for his wife's rape, we see the darkness of his aura. Through dark wardrobe and use of lighting, Ray appears to be little more than a silhouette as he describes what he will visit on the man if he gets out of jail. He is cruelty and death made flesh; he is terrifying.
In a scene following this, Antigone's sister is giving her information about the party. She also gives her a painting, saying she was trying to paint "a woman drowning on dry land."
In a following alternating series of scenes, we see Frank interacting with Stan (the employee murdered by Blake), and Ray in a observed visit with his son. The contrast between the two is apparent: Frank is warm and supportive, while Ray is unable to achieve a connection with his son (who appears nervous to be in his presence). "Things are going to be hard for awhile," Frank says, "but you'll come out. Because you got him in you. His fight. (dharmic lineage). Sometimes a thing happens," he continues, "that splits your life: there's a before and after.." This exchange highlights that Frank is a creature of pure will, for whom pain only serves to peel back the crude material of a man to reveal the "gold" within.
Ray, for his part, is deeply hurt at his son's refusal to express love or interest in him: rather than coping with this pain in the manner that Frank does, attempts to kill himself in the following scenes via a liquor and cocaine bender. He is attempting self-destruction in this sequence, because his one hope for decency (i.e., his role as a father) is apparently doomed. He attempts to push for release from the third Bardo, but is unable to due to unresolved dharma (possibly echoing Woodrugh's suicide attempt at the end of the first episode). At the end of the night, we see that Ray has demolished the contents of his house, including the emotionally significant models he'd done with his son as a way to connect. While his attempt at suicide was not successful, he has cleared the emotional blocks needed for him to complete his redemptive journey and achieve eventual release from the third Bardo (as indicated by his call to his wife, where he surrenders to her wishes). This indicates a break from dharmic lineage for his son, freeing him from the cruelty inherent in being brought up by Ray (as it was for Ray and his father). This is a strong metaphor for rebirth in the sense of the Eastern Book of the Dead: releasing the past so something new can come to exist. "Say yes," he tells his ex-wife, "and I'll leave your lives forever."
Later, Antigone is waiting to take the bus to the party outside of a place called the "Kali Club." This is a clever double entendre: a homophone for "Cali" (as in, California), but also a reference to Kali Ma (recall this death goddess's appearance in episode 1...see analysis for refresher). As stated in the previous episode (when Antigone was speaking to her sister on the beach), this party is going to occur in the area where Antigone was abducted, raped and murdered as a child. She is going home, to her place of death, to lay herself to rest. But with Kali Ma evoked, we are promised perversions prior to rebirth.
Prior to her arrival at the party, we see Frank and company move on the Mexican cartel. Upon entering the apartment, the camera rests for a moment on the shrine to Sante Muerte, the female saint of death in Mexican folk religion (a common object of reverence in the Mexican criminal world). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Muerte This is the same crowned female skeleton character that we saw, life-size, in Caspere's apartment. Recall again, the close temporal association between Kali Ma and this figure in episode 1: in that episode and the current episode, these parallel religious figures are literally one scene-sequence apart, their relationship undeniable.
A notable line occurs during Frank's exchange with the cartel regarding the girl he is looking to speak to about Caspere's hard drive: "But we need to meet...face-to-face... at some point." The presentation of this line isolates "face-to-face," giving it great intensity. A smooth reference to the "face-to-face" emphasis in the Bardo Thodal.
Next, Antigone is shown receiving a dose of "pure Molly." Molly, of course, is a common term for MDMA. While widely known as club drug, MDMA began as a miracle drug in phycho-pharmacology, often described as worth a year of therapy in one dose. This provides Antigone the means to access the trauma she experienced as a child, and begin her rebirth process.
During her time in the mansion, she has a flashback to the face of the man who abducted her. We later learn that this is man with long hair and beard we've seen in the photographs containing Pitlor, her father, and the mayor. Again, I'm leaning hard on the notion of Antigone's father being her abductor: partly because of the awkwardness of their dialogue (especially in an upcoming episode), partly because of her rebellion against his values, the role of incest in the classical Antigone narrative, but also because her father is never identified in the picture, though his long hair makes him most identifiable with the only guy in the picture with long hair.
Interesting note: the man in her flashback lures her into the forest by telling her there is a unicorn there. In antiquity, the unicorn was often associated with virgin maidenhood.
Anyway, get ready. It gets real in our final episodes.

IJW: Spectre (2015)

http://screenhooked.com/2015/11/22/spectre/
SPOILER WARNING
Alright, it’s been two weeks. I’ve had the same “spoiler-free” discussion with about 15 people now, and I’m ready to put out my thoughts after finally seeing it. I’m already sick of talking about this movie, so this thesis will be filled with SPOILERS.
I guess I should start at the beginning. The long take at the opening is probably the most impressive I’ve ever seen. It tops every shot in Birdman, Rope or Star Trek. The rest of the sequence, however, fell flat. It doesn’t appear to me that in Spectre, Daniel Craig doesn’t want to do Bond anymore (though he doesn’t, and I accept that), more than he’s very comfortable in the role of 007, but his stiff walking through crowds doesn’t convey a real sense of urgency no matter how many quick cuts, nervous camera shakes, or intense music Sam Mendes throws in.
Classic Bond films typically opened towards the end of a mission completely irrelevant to the plot that gets you in the mood to see Bond, and sets the tone for the rest of the film. Spectre fulfills almost all of that, especially the last part, because the tone they were going for was “long, drawn out, and a little goofy.” The chase through the Day of the Dead festival in Mexico City wasn’t interesting. I’m not talking about Bond’s little rogue mission, but the chase itself. I can leave the building blowing up randomly alone, and I thought the couch landing was a nice nod to the Roger Moore films (I would later find more and more), but how many times do we have to watch Bond take down a helicopter in these movies? I know there’s a finite amount of ideas one can do, but there’s no suspense in this opening sequence because this thing is 150 minutes long, and Bond has to live through it, and this guy hasn’t been in a hospital since he was born, so shorten the action sequence to where the helicopter only does ONE barrel roll, and let us move on to the title sequence.
Now, I find the opening sequence absolutely gorgeous, but most people have complained about the song by Sam Smith, which I’m okay with, it’s not the worst Bond theme, and you’re not going to top Skyfall, so I can let that go. I’m going to skip over the obvious tentacle porn joke, because I really like how they integrated the S.P.E.C.T.R.E. logo. Unlike most Bond title sequences, this didn’t bore the shit out of me, so I’ll give them props for that. But there’s still no constant theme running through (besides the tentacles), which is part of what made Casino Royale‘s title sequence so great. Still, this is probably the last thing I would complain about.
Now, what I like about how they open the first act is how they handle the other characters of MI6 in addition to Bond. We see Bond’s barely decorated London apartment, which we’ve never seen before, an interesting, if unsurprising look into the private life of 007. M (Ralph Fiennes) used to just be a guy who gave Bond his missions from behind a desk, but we now actually see what he has to put up with, especially since now the 00 program is getting ready to be replaced by a mass surveillance system called “Nine Eyes.” Ben Whishaw’s skittish Q is still fitting nicely into Desmond Llewelyn’s shoes, and the “will they, won’t they” set up for Bond and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) feels natural. Bond reveals to Moneypenny that Judi Dench’s M posthumously sent him on a mission to kill his target in Mexico and “don’t miss the funeral.” So after M grounds Bond, he enlists Q and Moneypenny to help him carry out this personal mission that doesn’t really make any sense looking at it from M’s perspective. Shouldn’t this guy have already been a priority if Judi Dench was telling Bond about him from the dead right as he was planning to blow up a stadium?
Anyway, Q puts microbot tracking things in Bond’s bloodstream, which proves useless for the rest of the movie, because it’s supposed to add tension to the Bond disobeying M plot, but Q just lies to M over the phone anyway. It’s just one more thing we have to think about that doesn’t affect the overall story at all. Q could have contacted Bond in one way or another without approaching him in person at a ski resort psychiatrist’s office (seriously, what even is that place?). I’ll get more into Lea Seydoux’s Dr. Madeleine Swann later.
Bond goes to Rome for the funeral against M’s orders to attend the funeral of the guy he kicked out of a helicopter. The attendees are mostly made up of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. employees and the woman Bond made a widow. We get our first look at Christoph Waltz, who I thought was in the right amount of the movie (more on that later) but we don’t see his face, and he leaves as soon as Bond is in his peripheral vision. After saving the widow in a very Roger Moore-esque exchange, he begins seducing the widow with some of the most awkward kissing I’ve ever seen on film, before giving him the location of a S.P.E.C.T.R.E. meeting. We never see this woman again, checking the box for “The Bond girl nobody cares about.”
This is where it gets interesting. Bond attending the S.P.E.C.T.R.E. meeting was in all of the teasers, so the impact was most certainly lost. Christoph Waltz controls the room without saying a word or showing his face, which is all thanks to the cinematography and Mendes’ direction. I guess I’ll refer to him as Blofeld because it’s easier to type (and we all knew he was going to be Blofeld anyway). Blofeld addresses the events in Mexico, and Mr. Hinx (Dave Bautista) takes the place of the man at the other end of the table by gouging his eyes out with what appear to be metal fingernails. We don’t exactly get a good look at Hinx, for most of the time he’s on screen. It’s clear that he’s a near-indestructible monster, but… he’s Jaws. He’s just a bigger version of Jaws. I understand it’s difficult to create new villains in a time where everybody nitpicks the logic, but you moved the steel from one part of the body to another, and you made sure he didn’t talk until his last appearance. They even killed him the way Brody, Quint and Hooper tried to kill Jaws! After Blofeld addresses Bond directly, he runs and we get a boring car chase (though humorous in that half the car’s gadgets hadn’t been installed yet) capped off by Bond ejecting from the car. Meanwhile, we’re getting exposition from Moneypenny, and so we don’t groan at the idea of returning to Quantum of Solace, we’re given something almost as boring to look at.
Anyway, Bond goes to Austria to find Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) dying of thallium poisoning and eventually convinces him to lead him to S.P.E.C.T.R.E. through his daughter, Madeleine, who as all Bond girls do, rebuffs James at first before eventually succumbing to his charm after he saves her life. This is where I might go on a bit of a rant, because her addition to this cast and the plot drags out this movie and extra thirty minutes at least. Instead of White telling Bond about the hotel in Morocco, we have to wait until Bond gets it out of Swann, all because Bond had to be a man of his word. I guess they just wanted a chase sequence in the snow instead of Morocco because they already had Mexico as their “hot and arid climate” chase setting. I don’t hate Seydoux. She’s serviceable in her role, but she’s added in to up the stakes for Bond as a love-interest, which he shouldn’t have, because Eva Green’s Vesper was supposed to be the last woman Bond would ever love (or trust for that matter). This was just some bullshit added in so that Bond (by which I mean Daniel Craig) could have a reason to “leave” at the end. We now have to endure a long train conversation about guns and self-defense before Hinx interrupts and other shoehorned character development. Not to mention just waiting for stuff to happen like when they’re picked up in an old-fashioned Rolls Royce.
But back to Austria, it is revealed that all of the villains we’ve seen Craig’s Bond defeat (yes even in Quantum) is connected through S.P.E.C.T.R.E. and I’m fine with it. Is it forced? Sure, but what did we expect? This is one of several things in the movie meant to give it a finale vibe for both Craig and Mendes, a privilege no other Bond actor was ever given. Q is utilized well here, but like I said before, he doesn’t need to be there for anything other than the screen-time his agent probably fought for. Swann reveals the name White gave Bond is the hotel in Morocco, in which Bond drunkenly points a gun at a rat which leads him to S.P.E.C.T.R.E. That sounds ridiculous, and it is, but at this point, I don’t care, because we’re already deep into Roger Moore territory, so this already can’t be taken that seriously anymore. I don’t know how White accessed that room without tearing up the dry wall, but I’m letting that go, because we’ve got coordinates to a crater in the desert! I almost forgot about the car chase with the plane and the car after Madeleine is taken by Hinx, because nothing happens in it. Craig follows the car with the plane, they exchange bullets, and then Bond crashes the plane into the cars so he can get Madeleine. It’s a boring sequence that lasts way too long, but it’s okay, because we got the girl who refuses to talk to Bond that he will eventually have sex with.
So now we’re finally meeting Blofeld for real this time. The introductory sequence with the meteorite is beautifully shot, as is most of this movie. Aside from maybe Skyfall, this has the best cinematography of any Bond movie. Anyway, Blofeld reveals that he created Nine Eyes which will give S.P.E.C.T.R.E. unlimited access to the entire intelligence community (though it looks as if they already have it?) and monologues about his evil plan as Blofeld is prone to do. What follows is one of the best torture scenes in 007 canon, second only to Casino Royale‘s medieval vasectomy. Blofeld reveals his personal connection to James, as well as his full name “Ernst Stavros Blofeld” which he adopted from his mother’s side of the family. And this is something that I had mixed feelings about. I do think Blofeld should have some kind of personal beef with Bond. Bond messes with his operations, he killed Bond’s wife. That’s as simple as it should be. I think it’s too much of a stretch to say that Blofeld is essentially his step-brother with daddy issues. We’re supposed to think of Blofeld as a scoiopathic criminal mastermind, but here he’s just a child jealous of his father’s attention. And we get to think “Oh, well he’s crazy, so it all makes sense.” But Bond would probably remember Franz Oberhauser, and he doesn’t reveal that to anyone, not even the audience. I get that he’s not supposed to trust anyone, but he trusts everyone in this movie to do their jobs. I guess it wouldn’t do anyone any good if they knew Bond’s connection to him. This whole backstory just feels to convenient for me, and it feels dumb that these just happen to be the paths that both characters took. The whole “author of all your pain” thing feels like a desperate attempt at making Blofeld appear even more villainous, when all we need is him in the chair. Granted, this scene with the watch giving Blofeld his eye wound was a nice addition.
Bond handily escapes the facility killing S.P.E.C.T.R.E. soldiers one shot at a time while accidentally blowing up the entire station with one fire. He and Madeleine rendezvous in London with the now defunct 00 section of MI6 which only consists of M, Q, and Moneypenny (wouldn’t it be great to meet other 00 agents again?). I almost forgot Tanner (Rory Kinnear) but that’s just because he doesn’t do anything in this movie. On their way to arrest Max Denbigh, aka “C” (Andrew Scott [aka Moriarty from Sherlock]), Bond, M, and Q t-boned by a pick-up truck, which I didn’t think existed in England, and kidnap Bond. M has his final confrontation with C, and ends up killing him as Q disables Nine Eyes. I don’t really have any problems with the scene except I couldn’t discern the punchline to M’s “What does C stand for?” joke. I now know he said “careless” which feels like a wasted opportunity at a better punchline. During the entire movie, M has basically only monologued about the importance of the 00-section and being able to pull the trigger, something that has probably been said in at least once during every actor’s stint as 007. I understand this subplot needed to be fleshed out more for the final act of the movie, and it works, but the whole surveillance and drone approach is clearly more effective in some ways than 9 agents who can seemingly do whatever they want without real consequence. But the rest of the English government is even more idiotic for thinking surveillance and drones can fully replace humans in terms of crime-prevention. There’s nothing more I can really say about that, but I didn’t really find it necessary that C die, especially the way he did.
Moving on to the final showdown between Bond and Blofeld in the ruins of the old MI6 headquarters. Bond’s name painted in red on the memorial wall would have been a nice touch had they not shown it in the trailer, and the whole firing range walk-through is a little too reminiscent of The Man with the Golden Gun for me to praise anyone for it. Bond finds Blofeld standing in a bulletproof cage that only exits one direction. As cool as so much of this was, it was a little over theatrical for my taste. Blofeld wasn’t ever one for painting directions on the walls and putting up pictures of deceased friends and enemies, he was just a bad guy who wanted Bond out of his hair. Anyway, Blofeld gives Bond three minutes before he blows up what’s left of the building so that he can either escape or die trying to save Madeleine. This is where Bond should have just escaped and stopped Blofeld on his own, but he has to save the girl he has very little chemistry with so that the audience likes him. Connery used to pull women in front of bullets after having sex with them. I’m just saying it’s uncharacteristic of Bond, especially at this point in Craig’s run, to give up a chance at saving the world to save a girl with whom he spent a few days.
Of all the deus ex machinas this movie throws at us, this one has to be the worst. Bond eventually finds Madeleine with less than a minute to get out of the building. We get the cliche “Do you trust me?” which has been said at least a hundred different times in similar scenarios, including Bond movies. They jump off the building, in full view of Blofeld and henchmen, and they land safely in a giant net. What was a net even doing there? Why would that have been at MI6 headquarters? How was it still set up? I don’t know, but we needed them to escape, so we got it. Then what follows is yet another fucking helicopter chase, this time with a boat, because we can’t seem to have a Bond movie without helicopters and boats. Bond takes down the chopper just by shooting at it with his pistol. At first, I was okay with him being desperate enough as to not let Blofeld escape. I would have preferred Blofeld escape and Bond deal with the fact that he failed despite saving an innocent life. But no, this is once again a finale for Mendes and for Craig, so that chopper has to go down with a shot to the engine in the dark from hundreds of feet away. Bond chooses not to kill Blofeld with the excuse of not having any bullets and M arrests him. It’s just stupid. It’s Pierce Brosnan-era stupid. We can’t leave any glaring loose ends before switching actors, which has only happened in Diamonds are Forever which had Connery continuing Lazenby’s story from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
The film ends with Bond driving off in the original Aston Martin with Madeleine, and thus concludes the story of the blonde blue-eyed Bond. Again, I have problems with this. The Aston Martin was a great reveal in Skyfall you can’t just do it again because you showed Q working to repair it early in the movie. That nostalgic hole was already filled. Also, as I’ve said earlier, Madeleine and Craig have terrible chemistry, and if anyone should be in the passenger seat of that car, it’s Moneypenny, but we needed a longer plot with more boring action sequences and a new Bond girl people care about, so Moneypenny is old news I guess.
I’m sure there’s more I could discuss, but that more or less concludes my review of Spectre. Craig’s Bond career has become a metaphor for the franchise as a whole, and instead of watching all 24 films now, you can just watch these four, and you’ll get the gist of it. The performances are all great, though I think the expectations for Christoph Waltz are unreasonably high, because everyone expects Hans Landa out of him. Craig’s Bond career has become a metaphor for the franchise as a whole, and instead of watching all 24 films now, you can just watch these four, and you’ll get the gist of it. Overall, Spectre is a solid entry in the Bond franchise. Yes, I said solid. Because what Bond fans have failed to realize, especially in recent years, is that very few of them are considered great films. The campy nature of most of these movies is a part of the Bond iconography, and Spectre exhibits some of the best and worst qualities of every era of the franchise. To reiterate some of the main points. It’s too long, the romance is contrived, pointless and unbelievable, the cinematography is off the charts, a lot of the action is lazily done, and while it does a good job of tying the rest of the Craig era together, it botched the relationship between the primary antagonist and the protagonist. Most of the people I know have already seen this, but in case you’ve read this detailed rant, I might still recommend it, because in spite of everything I’ve said, you can probably still enjoy it, and your opinion matters just as much as mine.
